HP has commissioned life cycle assessment studies which compare the environmental impact of producing a certain type of print on digital printing equipment rather than on an equivalent analog printing press. Conducted by external consultants, the studies conform to ISO standards and are rigorously reviewed by an independent panel of experts before publication.
The environmental case for digitally printed books
This 2011 independently conducted and reviewed report examines the environmental impact of different printing strategies - involving offset and digital printing - for fulfilling the demand for both a best seller and a classic book. The results demonstrate that the judicious use of digital on-demand technology has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of printing and selling books.
