Digital on-demand printing offers a range of significant environmental benefits over traditional printing technologies, such as offset and flexo. The ability to print short runs economically can contribute to reducing the high levels of redundant prints produced in many parts of the industry.

Variable data printing capabilities allow the printing of better targeted information, often including fewer pages that are not relevant to the reader. Digital printing also eliminates the need for plate-making and make-ready waste.

The growing range of HP Inkjet Web Presses, HP Indigo digital presses, and HP Scitex presses are bringing the benefits of digital on-demand—and greater digital productivity—to more segments of the printing industry than ever before.

For 20 years, the HP Design for Environment program has teamed product designers and environmental product stewards together to continually improve the environmental profile of HP products.

Just a few of the innovations that we have designed with the environment in mind include:

• Water-based HP Latex Inks—Groundbreaking inks that can produce odorless¹ sign and display prints while helping to create a better working environment for printer operators.
• HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press—This revolutionary machine with innovative features helps maximize the number of sellable prints while keeping the consumption of energy and consumables down.
• Environmentally certified printing materials—This extensive portfolio of environmentally certified large-format printing materials provides print service providers the options they need to help meet customers' requests for more sustainable prints.

HP currently offers a well-established take-back and recycling infrastructure across the globe, and is continuing to extend the scope of these programs.

The HP Planet Partners program—available in more than 50 countries and territories—is a free and convenient way to recycle HP Designjet consumables, as well as HP Scitex LX and HP Inkjet Web Press printheads.²

HP also offers take-back and recycling programs for hardware, large-format printing materials, and HP Indigo cartridges and binary ink developer.³

HP makes efforts to provide information and education to the industry on environmental topics. This includes a guide for organizations that procure print services explaining how to take a more sustainable approach to print sourcing.

HP has also pioneered development of educational programs, such as the HP EcoSolutions–Trained Printing Company program for HP Latex printer users, to ensure owners are getting the best results from their printer in environmental terms, and can learn more about going green in their sign and display printing business.
