O’Neil Data Systems is no newcomer to digital printing—the Los Angeles, California–based company has operated on a digital platform since the 1970s. Today, the company specializes in variable data-driven content like publications and direct mail campaigns.
Recently, O’Neil Data Systems noticed an increasing number of offset press-based shops turning to digital printing in an attempt to counter decreasing print quantities. In order to stay ahead of its growing competition, O’Neil Data Systems turned to the innovative HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press.
The HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press is designed to help industrial printers break through cost and performance barriers to enable cost-effective, high-quality production—from book and newspaper publishing to direct mail.
The press immediately helped sharpen O’Neil Data Systems’ competitive edge. According to Mark Rosson, vice president of sales and marketing, “The wide format, higher speeds and effective use of color all separate us from the competition.”

Breakthrough speed for variable data printing | | |
 | | | | “We’ve been doing digital printing for years with all types of digital equipment. But we could tell that with their inkjet web press, HP had taken a giant leap forward in quality and speed, surpassing anything we’ve ever seen.”

O’Neil Data Systems was initially impressed by how quickly the HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press processes complex print jobs. “We’ve been doing digital printing for years with all types of digital equipment. But we could tell that with their inkjet web press, HP had taken a giant leap forward in speed, surpassing anything we’ve seen,” says Steve Ellithorpe, operations manager.
With its scalable, high-performance digital front end, the HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press is well-equipped for intensive data-driven printing. It produces double-sided, full-color halftone printing at high resolution with 100 percent variable content at speeds up to 400 feet per minute. “The combination of the speed of the press and the ability to RIP at that speed makes the system complete,” says Ellithorpe.

Another area O’Neil Data Systems sought to improve was workflow. The company offers web-to-print tools that allow customers to place custom color orders online. Fulfilling these orders requires tight integration between the press and online platform.
“We needed a web-to-print solution to accommodate the high-quality color our clients wanted,” explains Rosson. “And the HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press is ideal.”
Beyond a workflow solution, O’Neil Data Systems was looking for a scalable, cost-effective press. James Lucanish, president, explains how ROI figured into the company’s investment: “With the HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press, we’re not tied to a click charge. We’re able to produce more pages cost-effectively, and that’s given us an advantage.”
