“With just two
HP Designjet L25500
printers, we can keep up
with demand that required three of our old solvent-
based machines.”

Wrap This

As president of Florida-based Wrap This, Dale Salamacha has built business by printing boat wraps for professional fishing craft. Most professional tournaments require wraps, and pro fishermen welcome the chance to stand out.

Quick facts

  • Leading marine graphics printer Wrap This increased its boat wrap production to meet strong demand, using the HP Designjet L25500 Printer.
  • Wrap This provides boat wraps with eye-catching quality and the durability to match solvent inks,1 using HP Latex Inks.
  • HP Latex Printing Technologies let Wrap This print and laminate immediately—and avoid delays associated with solvent-based printing solutions.

But Salamacha also knows that his pro fishing clients’ boats can’t stay out of the water long for graphics—a pro needs to be back on the circuit and competing as soon as possible. To help deliver the winning package with top quality and durability, Wrap This invested in its first HP Designjet L25500 Printer.

Productivity to keep the reels rolling

Wrap This completes most of its marine graphics jobs in the short windows between fishing seasons and tournaments. In less than 60 days, Wrap This provides graphics for up to 50 pro fishermen’s boats and truck rigs.

The HP Designjet L25500 helps Wrap This fulfill the demand it once struggled to meet. After having its new printer for just three months, Wrap This was able to print 18,000 ft2 (1,672 m2) of graphics for boats and vehicles. Vice president Damon Coppola explains:

Damon Coppola

“The HP Designjet L25500
has helped our production levels
increase by at least 25 percent. ”

With the HP Designjet L25500, Wrap This can have continuous, unattended print runs—even overnight—on long, 50-yard (45.7m) media rolls with the media take-up reel that comes standard on both 42-inch (106.6 cm) and 60-inch (152 cm) models.

Quality that’s trophy-worthy

A top client of Wrap This is professional fisherman and rising star Casey Ashley, currently the youngest pro angler on the Elite Series circuit. Like most pro fishing craft, Ashley’s boat carries colorful, eye-catching designs that include neon greens and yellows, fiery reds and oranges.

Wrap This found that the HP Designjet L25500 more than met expectations for such vivid colors. “The colors are bright and vibrant and very easily matched with the HP Designjet L25500,” Salamacha says.

Exact color matching is critical for bold wrap graphics like Ashley’s. “The HP Designjet L25500 has an amazing color gamut,” says Coppola. “We’re getting any color you can think of, even the very hard-to-get oranges and bright greens.”

The graphics also stand up to the harsh punishment of wet conditions and blistering sun. Whether for boats, trucks or trailers, prints produced with innovative HP Latex Inks, 3M™ Controltac™ wraps and 3M™ 8518 Lamination offer durability that compares with that of eco-solvent and low-solvent ink technologies.1

Latex ink technology adds to efficiency

HP Latex Inks are water-based and produce odorless prints,2 which gives Wrap This another advantage. Prints produced with the HP Designjet L25500 and HP Latex Inks come out of the printer completely dry, so there’s no waiting for degassing before lamination, finishing or packing for shipment. Coppola notes that Wrap This had to wait 12 to 24 hours when it used solvent-based printing solutions, which often involved an overnight delay.

“Now we can actually print and laminate on the fly,” Coppola says.

It’s just one more reason Wrap This chose recently to invest in a second HP Designjet L25500, to completely replace its three solvent-based printers from other manufacturers.

“With just two HP Designjet L25500 printers, we can keep up with demand that required three of our old solvent-based machines,” Salamacha says. He adds:

“We’re talking about expanding into other markets,
and we’ll be using an HP for every one. ”

1 HP image permanence and scratch, smudge, and water resistance estimates by HP Image Permanence Lab. Outdoor display permanence tested according to SAE J2527 using HP Latex, low-solvent, and eco-solvent inks on a range of media, including HP media; in a vertical display orientation in simulated nominal outdoor display conditions for select high and low climates, including exposure to direct sunlight and water; performance may vary as environmental conditions change. Scratch, smudge, and water resistance tested using HP Latex, low-solvent, and eco-solvent inks on a wide range of media, including HP media; water resistance is comparable when printed on water-resistant substrates. Laminated display permanence for Latex/low-solvent comparison using Neschen Solvoprint Performance Clear 80 laminate; for Latex/eco-solvent comparison using GBC clear gloss 1.7 mil hot laminate. Results may vary based on specific media performance and scratch testing methodology. For more information, see www.hp.com/go/supplies/printpermanence.
