Founded in 1988, Schmitz has become a leading provider of digitally produced indoor and outdoor large-format graphics in its domestic market as well as in France and Luxembourg. The company has transformed its business by continually investing in new equipment and steadily expanding its printing facilities and graphics applications.

It’s also the reason Schmitz was able to provide a high-quality visual communications package quickly for FIFF, the eight-day celebration of Francophone cinema in Namur, Belgium. Schmitz used its new HP Scitex LX800 Printer with HP Latex Printing Technologies for its winning performance.

The flexibility and speed to expand

Schmitz acquired the HP Scitex LX800 so it could better meet customers’ needs. Having the wider format was key. “With the larger LX800, the increase in width allows us to ramp up production throughput while gaining greater flexibility,” says Bruno Schmitz, co-owner.

At the same time, Schmitz notes that the true production speed of the HP Scitex LX800 helped make sure production ran smoothly. “As can happen, some artwork came in at the eleventh hour and left us precious little room to deliver everything on time,” he says, adding:

“The impressive speed of the HP Scitex LX800
let us complete the job with time to spare. ”

Schmitz printed around 100 large-format flags and banners that were hung on the streets of Namur, and it decorated over a dozen official FIFF vehicles with full-color event graphics—producing 430.5 square feet (40 square meters) of self-adhesive vinyl with the HP Scitex LX800.

Print quality that turns heads

The FIFF project also included a 164 x 5.2-feet (50 x 1.6-meter) marquee banner containing 100 large-format prints of iconic French-speaking film figures and glossy, panel-backed reprints affixed to the interior of the same marquee.

Schmitz knew it was vital to maintain the integrity of the original images with as faithful a reproduction as possible. Despite using two different substrates for the two-sided marquee, color and print quality matched well across the whole series of prints.

“We were delighted by the stunning visual quality of the entire communications package,” Schmitz says. “We can undertake a virtually limitless array of projects with the HP Scitex LX800 while still achieving exceptionally good print quality at high production speeds.”

Living up to green credentials

With its “Green Attitude” slogan, Schmitz expresses its environmental ethos. The company is Europe’s first large-format digital print business to receive the coveted EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) certification for environmental performance.

For Bruno Schmitz, the slogan and EMAS certification go hand in hand with its HP Scitex LX800. “The HP Scitex LX800 proved pivotal for making the EMAS grade,” Schmitz says.

The HP Scitex LX800 uses water-based HP Latex Inks that produce odorless1 prints ideal for display areas where odor is a concern, such as hospitals, restaurants, or a theater lobby at the FIFF. During production, the HP Scitex LX800 also eliminates the need for special ventilation 2 at Schmitz’s print facility. Schmitz adds:

“The LX800 lets us uphold our green credentials
without compromising in other key areas. ”

1 Some substrates may have inherent odor.
2 Special ventilation is not required for HP Latex Inks to meet U.S. OSHA requirements for occupational exposure to VOCs. Special ventilation equipment installation is at the discretion of the customer—no specific HP recommendation is intended. Customers should consult state and local requirements and regulations.
