Transportation firm reduces costs and saves time with the HP Designjet T2300 eMFP

“We used to only
get this kind of quality
if we sent out for an air
photo from a professional company. Now we can
do it ourselves.”

— Doug Hall
Principal
BA Consulting Group

BA Consulting Group specializes in moving people and goods through urban environments, but at its offices in Toronto, Canada, the firm recently faced its own traffic jam. Its two large-format printers were backlogged, and BA Group’s 40 employees were losing time waiting in the queue. In addition, color print jobs went to a reproduction house, which caused further delays.

Quick facts

  • Printing on the HP Designjet T2300 eMFP has allowed BA Group to save time and add color to its plans.
  • Clients are wowed by the quality of printing on HP Premium Instant-dry Satin Photo Paper.
  • BA Group can offer its clients more detailed plans and faster changes with the HP Designjet T2300’s built-in scanner.

So, in August 2010, BA Group sought to improve its production time and eliminate outsourcing by testing an HP Designjet T2300 eMFP. It did not disappoint.

“We loved it,” says John de Schulthess, senior computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) technician. “When we had to return it, we went out and bought a new one.”

A need for speed

The HP Designjet T2300 eMFP tackles approximately 90% of the firm’s daily printing. That’s about 50 large-format prints a day. In addition, the HP Designjet T2300 has eliminated the need to outsource large files. Doug Hall, one of the principals at BA Group, sees a competitive advantage to in-house printing.

Doug Hall

“The world is working faster,
so no one wants to wait half a day
for you to go out and get your prints.
You need them now. ”

BA Group recently tested the versatility of the HP Designjet T2300 eMFP on a traffic control signage and pavement marking plan for a shopping center near Toronto. Files for these plans were notoriously large and difficult to process. “In the past, because of technological limitations, these plans were plotted in black and white,” says Hall. But when printed on the HP Designjet T2300, the plans processed so much faster that designers could easily add color to their work.

“How did you do it?”

For most of its daily printing on the HP Designjet T2300, BA Group uses HP Bright White Inkjet Paper. But when project teams have to present their work, they print exclusively on HP Premium Instant-dry Satin Photo Paper.

“When we bring these drawings to meetings, people ask, ‘How did you do it?’” Hall says. “We used to only get this kind of quality if we sent out for an air photo from a professional company. Now we can do it ourselves.”

Outsourcing used to cost nearly $100 CAD per color print. Now, the firm can do it all in-house—for around $2 CAD per print.

Scan on the spot

For BA Group, one of the most exciting features is the scanner built into the HP Designjet T2300 eMFP. It has allowed BA Group to free up office space by archiving a decade’s worth of old drawings. Workers can also copy a drawing for a client without having to leave the office, or mark up a document and scan the changes into their electronic files.

And with HP ePrint & Share,1 users can print and share files over the Web or print to any HP Designjet printer without installing drivers. Hall explains:

“The more features we discover,
the more things we can do that we couldn’t do,
or we hadn’t thought of doing before. ”
